RAKHI DAY
Oxfam Make Poverty History - Rakhi white wrist-band
Oxfam have produced a limited edition version of the Make Poverty History white band for the 2005 Rakhi (or Raksha Bandhan) Festival, on 19 August 2005. The specially designed band features the words ‘Make Poverty History’ with a Hindi inscription of ‘sisters and brothers unite’. By wearing the special white band you can show your support for sisters and brothers around the world who live in extreme poverty.
The white band is the symbol of Make Poverty History , and the Global Call to Action against Poverty. In the time that it takes you to tie a Rakhi around your brother’s wrist, a child in a developing country will die. Every day, 30,000 children die unnecessarily. Just because their families are living in poverty. Put another way, this matches the death toll of the Asian Tsunami every nine days. It doesn’t have to be like this.
Talvin Singh, Veronica and Shobna Gulati have all given their support to our Rakhi campaign. Music legend Talvin Singh said: "At a time when we are celebrating the unity between our sisters and brothers on Rakhi Day, wearing one of Oxfam's special wrist bands will show that you are also remembering your sisters and brothers around the world. I'll be wearing mine with pride on the 19th of August."
Singer Veronica added: "I'm definitely going to be tying one of these bands around my brother's wrist on Rakhi day. They're a great way for young Asians to support a great campaign in what's been a fantastic year for Make Poverty History."
Corrie star Shobna Gulati has also got one of the bands: "When we celebrate with our brothers and sisters on Rakhi day, it's also important to remember all our brothers and sisters around the world, many of whom live in poverty."
Music maestro Nitin Sawhney donned his band, and said "Wearing one of Oxfam's Rakhi bands gives us all a great chance to back the Make Poverty History campaign at the same time as celebrating a special day."
You can support MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY by wearing your special white 'Rakhi' band throughout 2005. Get yours for £1 from one of the following Oxfam shops, or online for £2 from the Make Poverty History shop.
